Expandabode was developed by the team at Willow Architecture + Design to bridge the gap between bespoke architecture and generic kit homes. After three decades of designing high-end homes in Melbourne and the United States, we realised that many landowners needed a faster, more predictable path to high-quality design. Expandabode takes the rigorous standards of our ARBV-registered practice and applies them to a series of 'Pre-Architected' models - specifically optimised for Victoria's 2025/2026 Small Secondary Dwelling (SSD) reforms.

A. Expandabode is an architect-led system designed to unlock the hidden value in Victorian properties. We have replaced the traditional, slow architectural model with a suite of ‘Pre-Architected’ dwellings specifically engineered to meet Victoria’s 2026 Small Secondary Dwelling (SSD) and Townhouse Codes. By combining the design rigour of a registered architectural practice with a streamlined "Deemed-to-Comply" pathway, we deliver high-performance, cost-effective homes in a fraction of the traditional timeframe.

STEP 1 - Determine your Dwelling Type We identify the fastest legal pathway for your block. Whether it’s a 60m² Small Secondary Dwelling (SSD) under the no-permit rules or a Dual-Occupancy project under the new 30-day Townhouse Code, we assist during the feasibility stage to ensure your project qualifies for the "Deemed-to-Comply" fast track.
STEP 2 - Customise your Design Choose your model - Nook, Nest, or Elevate - and customise the layout and style to suit your site. Our designs are "Pre-Architected" to meet the latest 2026 7-Star Energy Standards and Livable Housing requirements as standard.
STEP 3 - Obtain Planning Approval (If Required) Under the 2026 reforms, most 60m² SSDs on residential lots bypass this stage entirely. If your project is larger or on a complex site, we leverage the new 10-day or 30-day "Better Decisions Made Faster" streams to secure your permit with no third-party VCAT appeals.
STEP 4 - Documentation for Building Permit + Pricing We complete the technical documentation necessary for a Building Permit. This "Shovel-Ready" package includes the detailed specifications builders need for fixed-price quoting, ensuring the build stays on budget and on schedule.

Our models are designed to align with Victoria’s 2026 planning pathways. We categorise our designs into two streams:
Stream 1: The Small Secondary Dwelling (SSD) Pathway
Ideal for fast-tracked backyard additions. Often bypasses the Planning Permit process entirely.
NOOK: Our signature 'Deemed-to-Comply' unit. High-performance design up to 60m² (Gross Floor Area).
Stream 2: The Townhouse & Dual-Occupancy Pathway
Ideal for maximizing land value and long-term investment. Utilizes the 2026 30-day "Better Decisions Made Faster" stream.
NEST: A single-storey, self-contained 1 or 2 bedroom detached home, > 60m² SSD limit.
ELEVATE: A premium two-storey, 3-bedroom detached home. Perfect for narrow blocks where you need to build "up" to save garden space.
TWIN: Side-by-side townhouses (3-4 bedroom). Designed for full site redevelopments.
TANDEM: Front and rear townhouses (3-4 bedroom). The classic "battle-axe" development model.
